Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). 20 eLab - The user interface is intriguing and enables anyone to build a course, without having the typical “ooh that looks so lame” with some rapid content authoring tools. The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). Yeah, I know we have just jumped into January, but in a review of the past several months, authoring tools continue to follow a similar path amongst themselves with certain feature sets. I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game.

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. While the assumption would be that all the products are alike, or that fee based tools are superior to their free counterparts, nothing could be farther than the truth. Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. E-Learning 24/7.

Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers. Authoring Tools for developers. The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. Professional Presenter X – comes with sim tool, assessment, capture tool, documents to flash tool, etc.

Standalone Quiz/Assessment Tools. I love Questionmark, its a wonderful product and it can use a “connector” to integrate into your learning platform or system. However, times are continuing to change in regards to the overall standalone quiz/assessment tools market. Greater increase in the number of learning management systems offering quiz/assessment tools. The same can be said for survey tools. Collaborative Learning Systems.

They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. LMSs/LCMS/CMS/learning platforms in commercial and open space continued their presence. I have seen continued interest and downloads for open source AR tool kits. For the mobile learning space – it is a necessity.

In 2012 it has been all about collaborative/peer review with authoring products, and it still will be in 2013, but the avatars/actors with/without backgrounds are going to be in “fuego” Where can it go? One vendor already offers it in 2012, and knowing this industry – if something takes off and works, others will follow. E-Learning in General. M-Learning.

The same thing applies to the learning management system market. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. I mean if you say you need “e-commerce for 500 users, certificates, ability to add users to groups for courses”, that would cover about 550 systems. No vendor could say honestly that their system is the best for you, because they are missing a lot of information. Whichever sticks – is your vendor.

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. Examples: E-mail notification via SMS. Smart App for TV – One LMS vendor.

If you are like the thousands of other people exploring the purchase of a learning management system, the key to success is asking the right questions. . Because if you are using a content authoring tool that is SCORM 2004, then you must find a system that is at least 2004. Your tool will not work with a 1.2. Unless you purchased a tool that is only AICC compliant, which in that case, time to ditch it and get another one. Content Authoring Tool.

For those of uninitiated, Online Educa Berlin, is an e-learning conference geared towards higher education and with some corporate. If you are an e-learning vendor in the higher education space and doing or planning on doing business in Europe, this is the place to be.

Because those who were fortunate to attend the World of Learning Conference, everywhere they looked was a nugget of gold, especially those who used the dynamite technique of e-learning. While I am sure that occurred at WOLC, the ones I gazed at, which were presented by vendors, had no sales pitch whatsoever, rather it was all about a specific subject tied to e-learning. Heck, one vendor I know even landed a massive deal right there at the show.

Here is my report from World of Learning Conference (where I was presenting in Birmingham, UK). World of Learning Conference continues to deliver winning results. Why LMS vendors and authoring tool ones for that matter, do not come in droves to this conference is mystifying to me. . Each time I attend there are a lot of decision makers rumbling around seeking out vendors, wanting to start communication and scheduling demos, meetings, etc. E-Learning 24/7.
