I was using DazzlerMax and Authorware, which are superior offerings for creating courses. Articulate and the person whose idea recognized that rapid course authoring was the way to go, establishing a considerable market even today, deserved huge kudos and a lot of money—probably got a pen. At the time, I hated it.

If you are an Authorware fanatic missing the old days, you are still going to miss it – because while these capabilities are being added to tools they are still not at the level of Authorware. I remember pushing my pen around my paper in junior high creating a race game too. Audio Editing. Another feature on the rise.

Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim. SCORM compliance and/or AICC – there are tools out there who support neither – but that is not the norm and there are a few tools out there who also support PENS.

The last of the morning sessions was split into two breakouts: Harry Mellon with Dazzle Technologies talked about “Flash, Authorware, and Other Authoring and Development Tools Review” in one room and Patti Shank with Learning Peaks, LLC talked about “Articulate, Captivate, and Other Rapid Tools Review.”

Listen, Authorware is dead, so why create a product that is trying to bring it back to life with your own product? The latter is slowly gaining speed, which is an advantage to LMS vendors who have a CAT in their own product – which is SCORM,PENS/IMS compliant. Thus, ease of use is a strong requirement.

While I have seen a few that give off the “rapid build” appearance, unless you have experience with solutions in the past like Authorware, MacroMedia Director, or similar brethren, you will face some serious challenges. 2004, AICC, PENS, TinCan) would be equally relevant. If you are new, you can build.

Macromedia Authorware and similar products. While some could argue that Authorware was a RCAT, I disagree. PENS was created in 2005 by AICC as a new interoperability standard. Macromedia Director. HTML and Javascript. That was pretty much it. RCAT’s were non-existent. As for the others? E-Learning 24/7.
