I used it in 1999, to teach a 100% online journalism course in the University of Nebraska system. The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then.

Thinking Worldsâ„¢ educational game is an easy to use authoring engine that enables gamers and learners to create, edit, play and share their own 3D learning based games, that teach and entertain. Secondlife is a great step in the right direction but I can't purchase secondlife off the shelf and load it behind a firewall.

Someone did the instructional design, someone else worked on graphics, and then we had a programmer who built the courses in Authorware or some other application. Understanding by Design : start with your objectives in mind and figure out how to teach to them and assess the learner’s understanding. That’s usually not the case today.

Anyone who used Authorware can attest to that. And yes, someone can teach themselves to become an expert in a specific software, but too many people pitch themselves as an expert because they know how to do 50% of the product very well or specific items 100% of the time, and nothing else.
