Interestingly, a large portion of LMS vendors have not optimized their products for the iPad/ iPad2 and with the exception of two content authoring tools, HTML5 capabilities, specifically the ability to output a course in HTML5 does not yet exist. Everything was there for you, and the person simply plugged in images, etc. For e-learning developers and instructional designers, they were aghast and in shock. Simply put, one vendor has over 200 Flash-based templates in their product. Another vendor I spoke with, is offering 80 templates.

(No reason, I just love saying that) Mzinga shows up with a true social learning authoring tool. A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it. Features include: Community dashboards and developer blogs. 1st vendor to have online/offline mobile synch. Oh, HTML5 output too.

Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Flash output – still red hot. Characters – images of real people. eLearning Brothers offers such a product – and RCAT vendors are starting to add it into their own product. It isn’t.

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. HTML5 output. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. HTML5 templates. So what is missing?
