There’s nothing more frustrating than blurry pictures. While you can try tinkering in a photo editing program, or shrinking the image and crossing your fingers in hopes that no one looks too closely, the best strategy is to start with crystal clear pictures. But there are, indeed, a bajillion different file types.

We’ve all seen e-Learning that features endless stock photos of people in business environments, sitting at desks but not actually doing anything related to the job your learners are training for. Take the time to create your own images if your budget allows, or really search through stock photo sites to find the best image.

Your coworker asks for a photo, so you quickly email him the one from the web. Images are made of tiny pixels (picture elements), or squares of color. You usually don’t notice individual pixels because they all blend together to form the picture that you recognize. Heavy file size can be a clue, but not in all cases.

For example: we recently completed an e-learning course on disaster relief with photos from the organization’s public relations department. We also worked on a harassment prevention course that incorporated scenario photos from a professional photo shoot. Some of these photos had a file size of 10MB or higher.
