The reason for the acquisition at least from a press release and information on the purchase (and available for viewing on the Skillsoft site), screams of HCM (Human Capital Management). HCM, among other things is all about HR (human resources), HRIS (human resources information systems) and the wherewithal of all that is part of it.

In only a few short days, my reaction to Skillsoft acquiring SumTotal Systems has shifted from “Wow!” I love acquisitions. They shake things up and restack the competitive deck giving new competitors a chance. to “Hmmm” to “Eureka” to “Yeah!”.

However, I would be concerned if I was a starter LMS vendor because Moodle is going to cause you grief in the bottom of the market. SkillPort scores very high as well on satisfaction. This is a system that has a lot of potential, but still lacking a few key items in the areas of classroom management, compliance, gamification (no leaderboard), event management and so on. I place the system in my good to excellent category, simply because of its potential. They sell the system two ways.
