I suspected that the expo would feature a large quantity of rapid content authoring tools. Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools. Back in 2000, the knock on rapid content authoring tools were they “pre-template” driven solutions.

Fears of the Course Authoring Tool Market

Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed. Long has tools such as Studio and Captivate been on the higher side, the same can be said for vendors such as Rapid Intake and dominKnow.

HTML5 output. Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. It is time to realize that Flash output just isn’t enough anymore for folks. HTML5 templates. The magic 8 ball is a fun item to use.

Personally, I like this because everyone who uses software, often jumps right in and starts going, rather than take the time to read how to do things (inc. Even ID books or books teaching you how create WBT courses in 2000 (One of my favorite WBT books of all time, interested? Same with the flash icon. Who is still using flash, BTW? If you are going to offer Flash as an option, why not HTML5? There are plenty of HTML5 object sites out there.

Samsung Galaxy S is expected to be the first real challenger to the iPad, it runs on Android OS, offers Flash 10.1 and HTML5. Again, the iPad runs only with HTML5, not Flash 10.1. True, the other tablets and Samsung offer Flash 10.1, but they offer HTML5 too. What browsers did they test on, because the current browsers available and the beta and new versions being released – are different in a few ways, especially when it comes to HTML5.

In 2012 it has been all about collaborative/peer review with authoring products, and it still will be in 2013, but the avatars/actors with/without backgrounds are going to be in “fuego” Where can it go? I believe that you can expect some type of voice capability with the actors/avatars as in the ability to either lip synch with the characters via audio tool/recording tool in the product will show up more in 2013. HTML5.
