SCORM, AICC, xAPI – Which one do I need?

Every time I write about the course standards, whether on my blog or, lately, on LinkedIn, I receive a lot of responses, feedback, and folks wanting to know more. SCORM’s premise, not what it can or cannot do, was its huge premise of interoperability—far more so than AICC. SCORM is not easy to learn.

At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. When I first joined Rustici in 2011, SCORM was the de facto standard for our customers. xAPI was a glimmer in the eye of ADL, Rustici and in particular Ben Clark, who was spearheading Project Tin Can development.

I’m thinking in particular of those who work to advance our standards. The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. The Department of Defense’s ADL initiative decided upon a version, to move things forward, and thus was born SCORM. Standards are good. And it’s hard work!

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. I agree it will be the next generation of a compliance standard, but I do not see it having major impact in 2015. – don’t. As for the other video tidbits.
