Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The problem with committee work is well known; in this case vendors who participated wanted the standard to make it easy for their content to be made compliant.

Many eLearning vendors create content that is not LMS-agnostic. Vendors whose eLearning content complies with all versions of industry standards and has been tested on multiple LMS platforms can escape many of these problems. AICC Content libraries might also reference the AICC standard, which is similar to SCORM 1.2.

It is not only a shift from tracking and tracing to enabling learning experiences, it opens op a whole new world of possibilities. But the vendors are already stepping in and create the cars, roads and gas stations, new learning theories will emerge and it will become clearer in the future. And this is big!

I try to spot the emerging trends at conferences like this, for this conference there are two. Acceptance for cloud based solutions is definitely growing, almost all the vendors have plans in that direction. He showed a video where AICC announced that they will adopt TinCan. They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. If emerging technology has taught us anything, it is only a matter of time until it bounces into our space.

Agile learning: Often contrasted with the ADDIE process, the Agile design method emerged in the 1970s and became widely adopted in the 1990s. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in an LMS. Results are then refined over multiple quick iterations.
