Right now I am doing a survey on authoring tools (more on this at the end of the post) and so far 100% of all respondents state that HTML5 output is required in an authoring tool. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. HTML5 templates. Not anymore.

Initially I wasn’t going to post authoring tool rankings beyond the top ten, until July. However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). It features templates, supports SCORM and supports English, French and Arabic. Collaboration.

Tools these days come in three flavors. Geared toward e-learning developers and instructional designers. Authoring Tools for developers. The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers.

The RCAT (rapid content authoring tool) market continues to be healthy with nothing to slow it down – uh, except maybe one thing (more on that later). I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. Templates – growing at quick clip. It isn’t.

Standalone Quiz/Assessment Tools. I love Questionmark, its a wonderful product and it can use a “connector” to integrate into your learning platform or system. However, times are continuing to change in regards to the overall standalone quiz/assessment tools market. The same can be said for survey tools.

For each of these items in e-learning. Authoring Tools. In 2012 it has been all about collaborative/peer review with authoring products, and it still will be in 2013, but the avatars/actors with/without backgrounds are going to be in “fuego” Where can it go? E-Learning in General.

Because if you are using a content authoring tool that is SCORM 2004, then you must find a system that is at least 2004. Your tool will not work with a 1.2. Unless you purchased a tool that is only AICC compliant, which in that case, time to ditch it and get another one. What about PENS or some other compliance standard?
