In response to the demand for more accessible authoring tools, Authorware was born. Using Authorware , learning professionals could create learning programs with hyper-simplistic designs, primarily through dragging and dropping icons. So, simplicity was there for the author, but at the cost of effective learner engagement.

Over the last five years, we’ve seen that change because of efficient and effective rapid authoring tools. A large library of content developed using tools on the verge of expiry and delivered on platforms facing obsolescence will be a significant challenge for learning and development teams in large organizations for years to come.

I came into rapid e-learning from the world of Authorware and Flash where building courses took a lot of time and cost a lot more money. A lot of it is pointless compliance training and the organizations choose to make the least investment possible. But I saw the light in the early 2000s when I started using Articulate Presenter.

Microsoft has some really nice starter templates to help you organize your learning project. You’ll learn basic design principles and how to organize the content on your screen to create more visual impact. Compared to building courses in Flash or Authorware, the rapid elearning tools are easy to use. Start simple.
