The initial person who thought buying SumTotal was a great idea (initially it was) and then dumped it for a fortune to Skillsoft (another great idea), which in turn was someone at Skillsoft thinking this was a great idea, which turned out to be false and was a factor in Skillsoft going into bankruptcy due to the albatross known as SumTotal.

Course standards include xAPI and PENS, besides the standards of SCORM. . No, but then again, this is an issue with many course providers including Lynda.com and Skillsoft. . As noted earlier, I see this with a lot course providers (and aggregators) including Lynda.com, Skillsoft and even the MOOC freebies via Coursera (for example).

Then spend the time to identify the right system for you and your business. or with your payroll (ADP), or HRIS platform, or Skillsoft or whatever – 95% can do it – but it will cost you. Scope out Linkedin, and other social media channels. Nothing wrong with this approach, and I’d surmise over 90% of folks do it.

In the past year, I have seen a wider number of vendors including the PENS course standard, which in my opinion, enables anyone who builds courses, a streamlined and fast process for publishing into a LMS/learning platform. Am I an LMS? And if so.

Ability to upload a course or courses from a 3rd party course/content provider (example: Wiley, Skillsoft, etc.). SCORM 2004 3rd edition, SCORM 2004 4th edition, AICC, PENS, xAPI, CMI-5). I have worked at places where we had business units and would charge them for our online courses/content. As long as it has one of these.
