While I think there are many legitimate reasons why an organization should partake in virtual immersive environments (VIEs) for learning and collaboration, there are also some "less-than-comfortable" reasons organizations are leaning in this direction. Using a virtual world or metaverse for training is not as science-fiction as it sounds. A metaverse or virtual world is simply the natural extension and convergence of several technologies currently used for online learning. Tags: Second Life 3D worlds. This is similar to the Web 2.0

Netscape took the browser world by storm. Personally, I always found this nonsensical for doing so. You could have a presenter at one location, presenting, asking and answering questions, and being seen by others in real-time (with low to no latency), anywhere else in the world. was the rage, and CompuServe (RIP) was out.

In a 3D world, the interaction with the students feels more intimate than with a 2-D distance learning application such as Centra, Horizon Wimba or Adobe Connect. We've got plenty of great 2D platforms for communication, what does 3D add? Here is a short answer.

The diverse group is trying to work toward determining the best ways of teaching within a virtual world. For example, have chat words like DONE at the end when a person is done with their comments. Don't raise your hand or ask to speak until the person has indicated DONE. We had about 22 folks attend the meeting.
