This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . In all the years I have attended and have known about ATD (formally ASTD), this year is by far the most in terms of e-learning vendors, especially those in the LMS space.

Kineo Partners handle hosting (if you want it) and support, rather than Kineo Group. Charge extra for hosting – Kineo Pacific told me 6K to host, Kineo Group told me 12K to 18K to host including support. Seems to focus more on client side server, when space as a whole is focused more on SaaS. What I Disliked.

Video streaming – either through the system itself – I believe it would be something like the vendor gives you 1GB of storage for free and then charges for more storage; you can stream from another server and tie into the LMS in some fashion. One of the biggest costs in the education arena is paper based textbooks.

LMS vendors are continuing to add some very unique features in an effort to set themselves apart from the competition. This is to say that 90% of features most folks seek are nearly universal in a LMS – low cost or otherwise. SaaS – the norm, what no longer is the norm – hosted on the client’s servers only.

In fact there are systems that cost less than 25K that are excellent. Learning is really becoming secondary, even if these vendors offer a LMS. . Many of the vendors offer the LMS and these items such as compensation, benefits and alike are additional costs. File repository – gaining steam. Authoring Tools.

M-Learning – can view on tablets, including iPad. Cannot skin on the SaaS version and even if you host it on your own servers you have to do it via CSS code (this is not uncommon in the VLP market, but it still is a minus in book). Has a little bit of a learning curve, but once you get the hang of it, simple.

As a first step, identify your training needs that can be met with e-learning. Then assess how far these training needs are aligned to your business goals, which may be cutting costs or reaching your sales goals, to justify the investment in e-learning. Their reluctance toward learning is an instructional barrier.

But, when you implement an LMS for the first time, going for an open-source LMS and using it to host courses is always a better option. When you don’t have the resources for course creation, select the right e-learning vendor who has expertise in rapid authoring tools. You don’t even need a server.
