For the past month, I have been conducting a survey on learning platforms and specifically learning management systems. . The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems.

Are there vendors in the e-learning space who lack basic understanding around e-learning? Using “e-learning” to reference content often SCORM to be uploaded, so “E-Learning” is the header and the admin can now upload content. Under e-learning.

It comes from me talking to vendors, buyers, monitoring the industry all the while taking notes and seeing the trends/patterns appear right before my eyes. What has always amazed me are number of e-learning vendor web sites whose design looks like it came from 1995 when Netscape ruled the land.

Here are the top 10 trends that I have seen taking place in the industry, as well as a few forecasts. The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. Asia – misleading by LMS/LCMS vendors.

SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow? They purchased Outstart, a LMS. Talent management. To me, this is how vendors skirt the issue. .

Less vendors are offering the HTML5 output, which seems to be strange, especially as more e-learning vendors as a whole are jumping right in. another vendor who offers both capabilities is sothink ). Again, this makes the most sense, and again there are products out there that do it (not in the e-learning space).
