I must confess it is now four months since I received an in-depth demonstration from the people at Saba of their People Systems Suites. First off, it’s worth noting that Saba does not seem to have been suffering like so many of its competitors through the downturn: It gained 113 new customers in 2010, which was a record year. It’s SaaS (Software as a Service) offering, launched a few years ago to support medium-sized enterprises, now 4m users.

The Packet included numerous questions (mostly open essay) for each vendor to complete. The challenge this year though was “Enterprise”, which nowadays is all over the place in terms of number of minimum end users. If a vendor pushes Enterprise, and they see Enterprise as 1,000 or more people, and another vendor sees Enterprise at 5,000 or more end users (Enterprise is referring to employees), then both vendors slide into that one category of Enterprise.

I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). Are they better suited than anyone else for Enterprise or Extended Enterprise? However, I will say this: I like what Saba is doing. The system still – equally as Saba – needs some work.
