In this activity, each of the students took individual responsibility to seek out, evaluate and then post useful websites and online learning resources that were deemed indispensable to the group. Students were encouraged to explore each others’ gold dust resources and attach their own comments on how useful they found them.

Students will use Facebook when they want to, and their institutional managed learning environment when they have to. It follows that many students will prefer to access learning resources, their tutors and peers through their own personal technologies. It doesn't end at school either.

I was also asked why I didn't use the term PLE (Personal Learning Environment). I have always believed in a hybrid solution and indeed use one in my own professional practice, but for the sake of the polemic momentum, I'm advocating that institutions seriously reappraise their use of the VLE (read 'managed learning environment').
