Hot Lava, which was recently acquired by OutStart, is now offering a free version of their m-learning development tool. My guess is that OutStart will be making significant improvements to the software, so why not offer the current version free as a teaser. ToolBook authoring tool - this is the DHTML authoring tool used at my company, but prior to this I used TrainerSoft (now Outstart Trainer), which is my preference. Please feel free to share what is in your toolbox or any recommendations on tools I should add. Adobe Fireworks - editing graphics. Windows MovieMaker - editing WMV files.

Last year, speaking to a conference of aviation trainers, John Alonso, CTO, OutStart , observed that ninety percent of mobile learning pilot projects he is aware of have failed. They rarely work out as the techies say they will, but rather too often create a painful experience for all concerned. Ninety percent!

e-Learning web-based training (WBT) development tool : This will most likely be your "go to" tool for developing asynchronous online courses and/or assessments (OutStart Trainer, Articulate, ToolBook, etc., Many tools have trial periods or are free. Keep in mind some may be DHTML output, others create Flash SWFs.
