Looking ‘Under the Hood’ of MOOCs

Maybe because, ‘under the hood’ of your average MOOC are the same old issues. Generally speaking, a cobbled up MOOC using freeware is not going to ‘cut it’ because it wastes student time and looks unloved. Online learning has been around since the 90’s, so frankly I don’t get the hype that MOOCs seem to be causing.

Great idea, major backfire. I was surprised at the number of vendors who had no idea on what is Tin Can. I would play this at home – too many game based learning solutions look like freeware or the old Atari games from the 80s. Giving out books to attendees after they listened to the the vendors’ sales pitch.

So what is the continuing issues in systems. It looks like freeware. A very modern UI that is crisp, clean, visually stunning with appropriate colors – sure admin can change them if they want, but the UI as a whole should maintain this modern UI look. I mean I’ve seen shareware that looks better than quite a few systems.

Luckily we have a fired up tech support guy who is dying to get a Wiki up and going so that he can update it with the latest tech support issues that come up. It would be a good idea to come up with some kind of contest or release event that brings a lot of attention to the Wiki. The ball is now in my court to make it useful.
