Turns out that there is this site, Textbook Torrents, that is using BitTorrent to distribute free copies of expensive textbooks. Having been a student for a good chunk of my life - and let me tell you - history grad students can buy literally a shelf of books each term - I chuckle when I hear someone from the publishers express bewilderment that anybody would use technology to avoid hundreds or thousands of dollars in book fees every term.
