Of course, having the conference free makes it a bit easier to attract attendees. One interesting result is that the audience for my eLearning 2.0 presentation were much more sophisticated that audiences at ASTD, ISPI and even the eLearningGuild. All the marketing was done through viral means - blogs primarily.

I did my eLearning 2.0 The audience was about half very new people to training and eLearning and the rest had varying levels of experience. Tried to Cover too Much Many people said that I tried to cover too much and didn't get enough into how/where/when to apply eLearning 2.0 Introduction eLearning 2.0

Of course, part of the issue is that we spoiled by the quality of our current developers and finding people who match up makes it tough. I've basically limited myself to eLearningGuild and ASTD conferences. If it doesn't look like a course and doesn't look like a reference system, what will it look like? We were very fortunate.
