Standards and success

Clark Quinn

Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards. I’ve been reflecting on the benefits that standards have provided. What worked for networks was the standardization on TCP/IP as a protocol for packet transmission. What worked for email was standardization on the SMTP protocol. HTTP standardization has been good for the web, where it’s been implemented properly! But it’s having standards that matters.

Real (e)Learning Heroes

I’m thinking in particular of those who work to advance our standards. The initial learning technology standards came out from the AICC. Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. The Department of Defense’s ADL initiative decided upon a version, to move things forward, and thus was born SCORM.

There’s a strong possibility that collaborative work between ADL and IMS could help a great deal. Not only is there a profile in our Registry , there’s also a Community of Practice still working on a version. If there are multiple working versions of what data to capture, then how is a reporting system attempting to derive meaning about “video” supposed to do so? We think ADL could assert an information model.

SCORM vs. LTI: what’s the difference?

Rustici Software

Now that we’re providing you even more options for exporting content, we thought it was important to outline the differences between SCORM and LTI, so you can select the eLearning standard that is right for you. LTI is focused on connecting learning systems in a standard way. It stands for Learning Tools Interoperability and it is a standard created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium. There are technically five versions of SCORM : SCORM 1.1,

Day 5: xAPI and more – what next for SCORM?

As we approach the end of our SCORM series, in many ways it’s just the beginning for eLearning content standards. On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. While many eLearning vendors still support AICC, the standard is usually a legacy of older platforms and businesses.

AICC and SCORM Compliance: The Benefits for Your e-Learning

To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.” The lab combined the work of existing standards organizations like the AICC , IMS and the IEEE LTSC into a cohesive reference model. Today, SCORM is the de facto standard for e-Learning interoperability. Another standard you may come across is AICC, although SCORM is much more predominant in the industry today.
