Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware. So, do I really need to continue using these authoring tools? These courses can be published as SCORM or AICC compliant courses.

The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. The idea of rapid content authoring, was non-existent. The dominating authoring tool by far, was Authorware. Authorware usage and fan base made Storyline supporters and usage look like a rock stage at a state fair. There are even fans today of Authorware, who if it was still around, would bounce right into it.

Consider the internet; developments on top of the TCP/IP protocol like SMTP and HTML allowed a variety of tools to work together to bring us email and the world wide web. Initially, when you developed eLearning, you were pretty much dependent on the tool you developed it in. They make working together easier.

The majority of people creating the courses used authoring tools, such as Authorware (difficult to learn, but robust), Dazzler Max (I used it, learning curve though), Lectora (difficult to learn) and many others that existed then. Other fun tidbits AICC was the leader here, then came SCORM. Yep, readily available.
