Alternatives mean. I kicked off this series because I was tired of seeing all of these sites “best of” “top X” “read me rankings” where they compare a learning system to others, and list it as “alternatives” or some other nomenclature. Each vendor will have Five to consider.

The initial person who thought buying SumTotal was a great idea (initially it was) and then dumped it for a fortune to Skillsoft (another great idea), which in turn was someone at Skillsoft thinking this was a great idea, which turned out to be false and was a factor in Skillsoft going into bankruptcy due to the albatross known as SumTotal.

At that time (early 2000s), learning management systems were an innovative new business application that helped companies build and manage e-learning and track and organize all forms of training. Many now sit behind consumer-like front ends built by companies such as Cornerstone, SumTotal and Instructure. Fast forward to today.

Originally, many LMS specialists tried to compete head-to-head with the established giants of the talent management LMS world like Cornerstone , Saba , SumTotal , SAP/SuccessFactors , Oracle. While most LMS vendors support direct uploads within their systems, they prefer embedded or linked videos from YouTube , Wistia , Vimeo or Brightcove.

Vendors can: Provide an open API library consisting of available scripts that a tech-savvy buyer can use to automate integration with client systems. Have a private API library or web services that require the LMS vendor to build and configure the integration. There are a variety of approaches to LMS integration. Google Analytics.
