Apple's recent refusal to support Flash is the latest of many headaches web developers have had to endure as the web has matured but standards have been slow to respond. I mentioned this to a Flash developer at lunch today and I could see the frustration in his eyes wondering how he's going to meet the needs of his customers who use iPads.

While it’s relatively easy for a teacher in a classroom to interact with the learners and, by ‘reading’ the situation, involve them in the learning process in the most effective ways, it’s much harder for those producing online learning materials. Lectora will publish both Flash and HTML5 for Apps and rendering through iPads and smartphones.

So, simplicity was there for the author, but at the cost of effective learner engagement. To combat “boring” eLearning experiences, programs like Adobe Flash and Director came on the scene with an animated bang (anyone else remember the bird crash vector animation from the early Flash demos?) I agree the technologies to create, deploy and manage HTML5-based mobile web apps will greatly improve in 2012 but I don't feel they will mature to the point they can replace all native apps – at least in most of the primary enterprise use cases for learning that’s managed and tracked. Adobe Flash, Adobe Captivate, Articulate Presenter, Articulate Quizmaker, Microsoft Office 2010. One of my most valuable insights was that the use of whimsical characters was an effective way to market the course, and increased recognition and participation in the project.
