It seems that little else matters but the metrics by which our political masters judge our schools. At a recent head teachers conference, one of the most astute comments was 'you can assess without testing.' We have known for a while that Sats - or statutory assessments - are there to provide the government with metrics about schools, and have very little to do with children's learning. There are better ways to assess children than Sats. We need to assess children's learning to ensure they are progressing.

Governments are more interested in ensuring that their statistics and metrics continue to rise, than they are about children's learning. They are forced to teach to the test , which detracts from good pedagogy and also leads to higher stress and anxiety levels, not only for the teachers themselves, but also for many of their students.
