Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

eLearning 24-7

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. I believe this is very possible, because regardless of the generation, people want easy, they want fast and if they could do a lot of things in a system for example, rather than having multiple windows open, they would do it. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system.

5 Trends to Watch 4 n 2011

They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). They love to show the amount of space in huge font and what it means (x number of courses/content, graphics, files, audio, video, etc.). One vendor with 750 users, priced out at nearly 24K a year; another close to 11.5K – thus depends on users is a factor. Social Learning and M-Learning.

Social Learning and LMSs Marketplace

eLearning 24-7

As social learning continues to grow, LMS/LCMS vendors are taking various approaches. While some view themselves as “social learning&# savvy, incorporating various components, others seem to see themselves as just sitting on the sidelines. LMS/LCMS vendors are following one of three approaches when it comes to social learning. Dip their feet in it – just a bit, a little here, a little there – oh and call it a full social learning platform.

E-Learning Innovative Products – They are Out There

eLearning 24-7

I especially love it when it happens in the e-learning industry. Innovators and Risk Takers – emerging technology integrated, new ideas, pushing the envelope in what is possible in e-learning/social learning/m-learning, coming up with something that has never been done before – risk takers. When they hit stride, other vendors take notice and soon, the lemming revolution begins. An e-learning marketplace. E-Learning 24/7.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. A greater number of people, worldwide are using SaaS then ever before, mobile products, tablets – especially the iPad – is growing at a feverish pace, people are using online storage, beyond just placing photos and media, and open source is continuing expansion. E-Learning and all forms within are normally taken via your desktop computer and either hitting your company’s server with your browser or going to a hosted LMS vendor’s solution. If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution.

LMS Vendors: U Can Survive – Innovate, Invigorate and Invent

It was within these comments, that afterwords, I decided to expand a bit plus identify other areas that I see, LMS vendors must explore – which they have not yet done so, to re-energize themselves. Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Majority of employees access a LMS or Learning Portal out of the workplace. Far too many LMS vendors are stuck in a rut. Social Learning.

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

The number one reason people leave their current system or purchase a different e-learning product? If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. I have seen over 150 systems, 80 plus authoring tools, dozens of web conferencing products, mobile learning, quiz assessment tools, CMSs and learning portals, and not everyone of them meets those two statements.
