I’ve used a bunch of desktop authoring tools – Lectora, Dreamweaver, Authorware, Captivate, and Articulate to name a few. I wish it had been around when I was pulling my hair out learning Authorware. Roger showed me how you could select parts of an image for instance or learn a language.

Compared to building courses in Flash or Authorware, the rapid elearning tools are easy to use. In the image below, you see a screen capture from an Allen course on brake parts. Anyone who used Authorware can attest to that. Someone could say, okay, in Level 1, you get text and an image, Level 2- gets you two exercises, a pound of ham, text and photo. Anyway, joy was not there, because it required double the work. Dazzler Max wasn’t any easier, although once you figured it out, different story.

While I have seen a few that give off the “rapid build” appearance, unless you have experience with solutions in the past like Authorware, MacroMedia Director, or similar brethren, you will face some serious challenges. These are very similar to Flash components and Authorware Knowledge Objects, in that developers are able to create pre-configured logic and visual components which accept parameters when inserted into Captivate. Second, Adobe has introduced Widgets to Captivate 4. Design and layout is already taken care of.

Michael Allen, the man who created/invented Authorware, has started developing a new tool. Driver – “it doesn’t seem like it’s less expensive to do learning activities than it was when Authorware came out.” Combinations of text/audio/images all better. Runs fine, but a little slow.
