The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems.

On 11-18-2010, I was part of an online panel discussing whether the LMS as we know it is dead and if not, what is the evolution of the LMS. Thus, the LMS vendors are creating a Bogeyman – their own bogeyman, and it does not have to be that way. Far too many LMS vendors are stuck in a rut.

I need a LMS. Q: I’m looking for a LMS that has classroom mgt, can have abc learners see only one course or a set of courses, while another group sees a different set of courses and I need to batch upload my learners. A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features.

Collaboration. I see this as one of the most important features for any learning management system, open source or commercial. Innovation drives the market (regardless if it is e-learning or not). Web conferencing vendors can establish themselves to expand beyond the meeting standard.

Numbers will continue and I see a real jump in percentile of these types of systems. They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). Plus, the key factor for these types of systems – is storage.
