Often times I am asked by training managers to evaluate their eLearning initiatives and specifically, types of eLearning courseware. First off, eLearning courseware and eLearning initiatives are not always mutually exclusive. For the sake of this discussion, I am going to look at what makes a “quality” self-paced tutorial.

Quite a few LMS (and various subsets), Learning Platform, folks pitching themselves as not an LMS, yet had the 16 standards and courseware LMS providers. Skillsoft debuted a new LMS, but I would say it is a major work in progress. Great courseware aggregator provider. And traffic as a whole was strong. High Marks.

Some may be free (TED) or some MOOCs, others are fee-based (Skillsoft, Skill Pill, Harvard Business, etc.). . Skillsoft too. Skillsoft has in the past done it, and get ready, there are plenty of course providers out there, who sell direct to consumer, via online, but well sell to you and have it in your LMS.

Sin #3 3rd Party Courseware installed into your LMS. Here is the usual approach, assuming you are buying 3rd party content/courses from an outside vendor – maybe Wiley, Skillsoft, Biz Library, WidgetLand, etc. Buy the courseware from the 3rd party vendor. But still, Q/A yourself. . Eliminate yourself as the middle-person.

I used to pitch up against some of the "big guys" -- NetG, SkillSoft -- who do some custom development, but the clients would choose our small shop because we provided better customer service. Many LMS vendors provide portlets, gadgets or widgets that allow for access of learning content (most often meaning courses and courseware) through the corporate portal. For courseware it can be hard. For example, Skillsoft along with its Books 24x7 provide good hooks for search and deep linking.

Lots of organizations have existing libraries of squirm conformant courseware that they might want to bring into a system. I think LinkedIn learning Skillsoft, there’s probably other catalog providers that will use AICC as the shareable standard. It has such deep roots in the industry. Then also looking to the future.
