Whereas we already know how vital interactivity is in learning, passive learning resources definitely have their place. When I want to know something, the first places I’ll look are Google, Wikipedia and YouTube. Learning resources can include things like web articles. Videos, podcasts, PDFs, screencasts etc.

Stephen Downes pointed out an article in The International Review of Research in Open and Distance Learning by Neus Capdeferro and Margarida Romero entitled Are online learners frustrated with collaborative learning experiences? This caught my attention because I'm a great believer in and keen user of this approach.

Early digital and distance learning merely transferred the traditional lecture to a visual medium. At the same time, the small group experience of the classroom competes with broadly defined communities such as Wikipedia, YouTube, Facebook and LinkedIn.

No, no examples there (except, strangely, The Economist magazine, which has a long-standing policy of anonymous journalism, and reference works such as dictionaries and encylopaedias, including the Wikipedia). We have text books, lectures, podcasts, tutor-supported distance learning courses, classroom courses, coaching, blogging.
