I use Word, PowerPoint, Visio. I think my dinosaur status as an instructional designer stems from the fact that Ive always worked for e-Learning vendors where the programming, graphics, and ID are distinct, separate job roles. I dont do any graphic design. I can now also say that I use blogger and wikis.

E-mail notification – auto notify end users when they sign up for a course, when they are assigned to a course and now my favorite – sending the end user a direct link to take the course – no need to go actually into the system. Reports – just a few. However you can upload PowerPoint, Word and similar.

A significant number of vendors, reported higher revenue and sales numbers in 2010, then in 2009. A calling to a large number of vendors (small, medium and big), are all reporting strong numbers in January, with many saying that January 2011, was their best month – numbers and business wise, in the last few years.

Canned reports – often the most common ones people seek. Ad-hoc reporting – i.e. you create your own custom reports. The system only accepts PowerPoint, Word – so your 3rd party authoring tool cannot work with it. Batch upload of learners. Ability to see how many learners viewed or completed the courses.

When you toss in ad-hoc reporting and filters for assessment data, it adds another push. E-mail notification – becoming very common. Includes a few reports – and I mean a few – nothing robust here. Can use PowerPoint. A Collaborative Learning System is different then a SaaS rapid course authoring tool.

Some vendors reported good lead gen – interest – will be interesting to see how many actually closed when it is all said and done. I’ll be honest here, this has never been one of my super favorite products, because its whole premise is built on using PowerPoint. BrainShark. Simple yes, true WBT wow – no.

Best of all, whether you are utilizing AR in education (I see this as a massive win for all students) or at a business location, you are no longer stuck with courses, even sims that are either boring, lack constant engagement or as we all know, turn off folks who frankly do not like e-learning. Augmented reality opens those doors.

Another vendor told me, they recommended that their end users (aka customers) do not use their built in course authoring tool that exists in the system. A couple of vendors systems reporting works really well, if you output the data to your own database or onto Excel and do it yourself. A couple of key notes here.

Graph reporting. Automated E-Mails – Invitation, Reminder, Completion, Public view page – after each is completed, the circle icon changes to green. To create a course you upload your PowerPoint. To archive a live course, you have open the course, which opens the course window and then click the archive button.
