Last week, while justifying Apple’s refusal to allow Flash player on iPhone/iPad, Steve Jobs wrote– “ New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too) ”. A few days before the launch of iPad Apple had released a list of ‘iPad ready’ websites having support for HTML5.

There are a number of alternative reading systems based on Readium technology (ReadiumJS, Readium SDK and/or Readium LCP) available. These are some of the recent, native Readium test apps on mobile platforms created to demonstrate the current Readium technology. However, these full-fledged apps are currently under active development.

If the technology infrastructure does not enable internet connection and the only availability is mobile, then m-learning on a smartphone is workable and clearly acceptable. Plus the iPad. HTML5 will be available on every one of those tablets, plus they will offer Flash (notable exception the iPad). The technology is saying it.

An API can tie back into the administration side of things, still providing you with the data needed, so if you want to go with an open source API it can be done. For a company that understands and utilizes emerging technology, the lack of really a nice set of social learning/social media functionality is baffling.
