At the dawn of the video recording age, a battle raged about the best standard to use: VHS or Betamax. In it, Sony came out with a better standard, but kept it to themselves. Meanwhile, JVC’s VHS standard wasn’t quite as good, but they openly licensed it. Standards provide several benefits. Learning Standards.

We posted earlier that Adobe is working with all the major mobile phone vendors [except Apple] under the Open Screen Project to bring the Flash Player to their devices and make it a de facto standard for mobile delivery. Adobe has an an End-of-life page , an obituary to Flash. Open standards such as HTML5, WebGL, and WebAssembly have continually matured over the years and serve as viable alternatives for Flash content. There will be no more security patches or updates to Flash either. Does not require any proprietary player to run it.

Three popular eLearning formats are also largely dependent on Flash technology for their delivery medium: SCORM, Tin Can (xAPI), and video. Flash will be allowed to die in 2020 as Adobe ceases to support the standard. Extensive use of Flash makes this development a concern for those of us working in the eLearning industry.
