Tuesday, June 12, 2007 My Personalized Personal Work Learning Environmental World Tony Karrer asked in the comments on my PLE post yesterday , Im curious if you distinguish your learning environment (tools, skills, etc.) Most of what Im doing outside of work these days involves the care and feeding of two small people, ages 2 and 4.

My current business card says Im a "Manager of Instructional Design". Got accepted to a Masters program for secondary ed, but deferred. Bought a bike and took scuba lessons. I started my professional life in operations -- behind the scenes helping people do their jobs better. But at this point, Im here to stay.

"Personally, I dont like to hide things from learners and play guessing games, so I am an advocate of letting the learner know, up front, what they will be expected to do at the conclusion of the course, lesson, or whatever. Im not sure I suggested writing WIIFM learning objectives, but they probably have their uses.

And by asking this, Im not suggesting that design isnt important, for it is - its seen by some as part of the pedagogy. As a teacher I knew all about Pedagogy and could create a great lesson and provide a excellent learning enviroment, I had great reviews and my students/trainees achieved great results. Im not saying to leave the info a mystery; Im saying that Ive seen a lot of elearning that seems to underestimate the intelligence of the learner and makes every little thing painfully explicit. I come from an old-school approach: I sort of understand the technology, but I leave the graphics and programming expertise to others. The programming skills should be left to the programmers. Do you work in or favor a design shop where each person has his or her own role (ID, graphics, programming, QA)? Whats your view?
