Communities / Social Networking and LMS Merger

I've not seen a lot about Mzinga in the eLearning world, but it represents something pretty interesting. Mzinga is a merger of KnowledgePlanet (an LMS provider and also the maker of the eLearning simulation tool - Firefly) and Shared Insights - a community / business social networking software company. I wonder if mzinga does?

Nancy was opining about her work with small teams, and I was asking about the larger picture. In the CLT, Dave Wilkins of Mzinga talked about the ‘Amazon’ model of tools around a learning resource (as a formal learning model) and the community model of tools embedded in a community.

I started from the informal picture, however, both to introduce the 2.0 I’m still not convinced there’s an LMS that integrates social networking tools in a way that makes a smooth segue from formal to informal, though I know Mzinga’s making a stab at it. Much of elearning 2.0 Your thoughts?

Still working on this, but my belief is that the picture is not going to be a simple, clear answer. However, there's Communities / Social Networking and LMS Merger announcement around Mzinga. Part of the issue is that if the picture is a loosely coupled collection of tools, then what's the role of a central piece of software?

they see their picture too – it looks exactly like the Linkedin groups. Mzinga’s OmniSocial product sort of fits the build, but it lacks some components, to what I see as a true system, specifically 100% standalone, since it can also be integrated into a LMS or used in their own LMS.
