The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. Sure, you can use the extensive list of tools on the market, but for those who want real power and complexity ala from the days of Authorware, pickings are slim.

It is time to realize that Flash output just isn’t enough anymore for folks. If you are an e-learning developer or instructional designer this has always been a favorite feature of authoring tools. I do believe that HTML5 output will continue to grow as an authoring tool feature. Layers, Triggers and Actions.

However, the ability to do real time via mobile – i.e. ask question, people in the room respond – real time polling – hasn’t caught on yet in this space. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Flash output – still red hot.

Add audio, video, images if you want – even Flash. Any 3rd party content authoring tool that enables you to add Flash files (and 99%) do, will work. Reminds me of the days of Authorware, but with less complexity and anger, plus with more features and usefulness for the developer. Did I mention any 3rd party authoring tool.
