Michael was, of course, the creator of Authorware, a highly powerful tool from the CD-ROM era, which Adobe eventually gave up on after they inherited it from Macromedia. Authorware was a serious tool that you could use for serious projects, but with a friendly interface. There is huge potential for dynamic and personalised feedback.

The next generation of authoring tools included a handful of really serious players, notably Authorware (now with Adobe) and Toolbook (now with SumTotal), both still going although not so strongly.

If it's an e-learning tutorial that you're after, including the usual mix of multimedia and interactions, then you have to make an important choice, between tools that you install on your desktop and online tools: Desktop tools ( Flash , Authorware , Lectora , etc.)

The creator of Authorware and long-time instructional design guru created something of a stir (at least with me) when he announced his dissatisfaction with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation) model for e-learning development and put his not inconsiderable weight behind a new process of 'successive approximation'.
