just to show how big and overwhelming the marketplace really is. Then I went on to show about 12 tools in more detail – some of which would probably make it onto a top ten list (Flash, Captivate, Articulate, and Lectora) – the remaining tools trying to hit at some of the other options out there (Smart Builder, eXe, Udutu, Thinking Worlds, Raptivity, Flypaper, Mohive, and Atlantic Link). I’ve been digging around to see if I can find an actual top ten list. After my session at ISPI earlier this week, someone commented that what would have really been useful is a list of the top 10 authoring tools in the market. During my presentation, I flashed up on the screen a list of the 122+ tools listed in the Brandon Hall database.

For example, in 2007 PowerPoint to eLearning Shootout they compared: Articulate www.articulate.com Atlantic Link www.atlantic-link.co.uk PointeCast www.pointecast.com Qarbon www.qarbon.com SCATE www.scate.com Udutu www.udutu.com Atlantic link scored the highest in the shoot-out. As far as Atlantic Link, I believe that the eLearningGuild survey treated them as a Software Simulation Tool and that's part of the reason they didn't appear when I created the graphic above (2007). In fairness to some other good vendors, and because I covered some big tools a couple days ago, I wanted to point out a few other good eLearning development tools that people are buzzing about. Again, I prefer to build everything from scratch using the Adobe tools, but I am aware that there are people who don't want to dive that deep into the development red tape. I
Content Point (Atlantic Link Limited) hylOs (link lab) I’ve been slicing and dicing our Authoring Tool KnowledgeBase and doing some online research in response to a question about collaborative rapid authoring tools that developers in multiple locations can use. Thought I’d share what I found for three reasons - (1) hopefully to provide some valuable information, (2) to see who I may have missed so I can add them and/or get them added to our KnowledgeBase (3) to let you know about the type of client-driven research we do at Brandon Hall Research.
Full details of this product are being kept under wraps until early February, but let's just say I was very impressed, and the pricing model will raise some eyebrows. These products will provide further competition for two online rapid e-learning authoring tools which have already achieved good success, particularly in Europe, and that's Atlantic Link and Mohive . On January 3rd I laid out my e-learning predictions for 2008 . One of these was: "We'll see more online rapid e-learning authoring environments come on the market, perhaps even open source."
There are some definite issues with some of these tools not really being for the same purpose, but I was looking to get Assima (which comes under EPSS) listed next to Captivate, Camtasia, etc. Based on a request on a message board around Software Simulation, I thought Id pull together some quick links to useful information on the topic: See also: Camtasia and SnagIt free . This shootout had: Assima www.assima.net Atlantic Link www.atlantic-link.co.uk Kaplan www.kaplan.com Qarbon www.qarbon.com RWD www.rwd.com Not sure what to make of the fact

Now, to arrive at a manageable number of alternatives, you have to sub-divide the market into categories: Rapid tools ( Articulate , Captivate , Atlantic Link ) as opposed to whatever the others are called ( Authorware , Lectora , etc.). Applications you install on you computer (all those mentioned above except Atlantic Link) as opposed to online services (Atlantic Link, Mohive , Alto ). Two situations recently have got me thinking about e-learning authoring tools. Firstly, I've been doing some more work on the script for The 30-minute masters
todays rapid e-learning tools and tool exponents include Atlantic Link, Articulate, Mohive, Lectora, Adobe Connect, and Adobe Captivate, said Ward, while champions of the rapid application approach include not just Ward but also Kineo. Rapid e-Learning Polarizes Opinion By Bob Little October 27, 2009 Much to the disgruntlement of instructional designers and other e-learning specialists, rapid e-learning tools are offering in-house subject matter experts excellent opportunities to produce e-learning materials relatively quickly and cost-effectively—at least in the U.K.
