I want to facilitate online discussions but how do I choose the right platform?

A discussion forum functionality is key for this purpose, other things are nice to have but often blur the decision about the forum to choose. It is important to make a comparison of the different platforms if you choose this option. Examples are Winkwaves , Tomoye , icohere , etc. The design process is longer.
