Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware.

The weapons including Authorware, Macromedia Director, DazzlerMax, Toolbook were the ones that separated the knights from the common folk. Eventually the land saw Macromedia Breeze and Dreamweaver enter the lands, with these items called templates.

The Macromedia set typically would toss in Director, which created an equally impressive array of course capabilities, but a deep learning curve. Eventually, Macromedia Dreamweaver came into the picture. HTML and Javascript. That was pretty much it.
