I personally think what has hurt them in the greater market is the push by so many vendors (some of which are legit competitors) to refer to them as “traditional”, citing how long they have been around. WebCT was a direct competitor back then, but BB was far better. Never to be underestimated. That didn’t happen.

consolidation continues - BlackBoard + WebCT & more.

Today BlackBoard announced plans to merge with WebCT; the two leading providers in the higher education eLearning space (BlackBoard alone forecasts US$150M+ for their fiscal year). It also doesn't bode well for WebCT's willingness to play with open source (sorry Harold!) Clark - you need to update your Chart of Consolidations !

Sorry, that’s marketing. You want marketing, I know some sites that will list you. I identify the Big Dogs as SumTotal by Skillsoft (yes, that is the actual name), Cornerstone OnDemand, Saba, SucessFactors and Oracle Taleo (although, I ask myself who is using this and if you still are why?). SumTotal by Skillsoft.

Now I don't normally get very excited about LMSs but these awards attracted my attention, because in amongst the Sabas and the SumTotals was little ol' open-source Moodle: Award for market share - Small and Medium Corporate Learning Management Systems - Platinum award: Moodle. LMSs (Saba, SumTotal, SkillPort, etc.)
