GoTo Meeting, Centra, Wimba, and other Web Conferencing Solutions…Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid

Kapp Notes

PowerPoint is slowly starting to broaden its capabilities and will, I predict, soon infringe on some well known software applications in the field of e-learning such as…web conferencing tools (and others). This video is one of the first inroads PowerPoint is making into the Web Conferencing software and I don’t think they are going to stop here. industry

We have 2D Virtual Classrooms, Why 3D?

Kapp Notes

In a 3D world, the interaction with the students feels more intimate than with a 2-D distance learning application such as Centra, Horizon Wimba or Adobe Connect. Sitting around a conference table for class. Another question and this one is simple.why 3D? We've got plenty of great 2D platforms for communication, what does 3D add? Here is a short answer.

Elements of a Virtual World/Metaverse

Kapp Notes

The first software element that makes up a virtual world is a synchronous learning tool similar to WebEx or Adobe Connect or Saba’s Centra. Using a virtual world or metaverse for training is not as science-fiction as it sounds. metaverse or virtual world is simply the natural extension and convergence of several technologies currently used for online learning. This is similar to the Web 2.0

Is Saba Coming Back?

Learning on the Leading Edge

The company acquired Centra and built out its own online meeting software. Saba Software, the pioneer of the enterprise LMS business (yes, they really did define this market), seems to be coming back. I had the opportunity to attend the 2014 user conference and things feel different. I've been following Saba for more than 14 years now (I used client/server version - Saba 3.0), and the company has been through a lot. Saba pioneered the enterprise, multi-domain learning management system. They have some of the most complex and difficult large global customers.

Discussion with Lucid Meetings

Kapp Notes

We decided that there had to be a better way and so we started Lucid Meetings. 3) How is Lucid Meetings different from other meeting software such as GoTo Meetings, Saba’s Centra or Adobe Connect? The other day I had a chance to learn about Lucid Meetings and to hear what they are doing in terms of creating interesting meeting spaces. That’s a great question. So give it a try!

Dispelling the LMS Myth

eLearning 24-7

Web conferencing or chat rooms – I know it might come as a shock but WebEx was alive and in full mode in 2000 and so was Centra – remember them? Last week I came across an interesting obit: A Mr. L.M. System had passed away. He was recognized throughout the e-learning and learning communities. Apparently he was loved by millions and hated by thousands. He tended to wear different colors and apparently wore logos – I surmise they were on t-shirts. He was online quite a bit and provided a wealth of information to his clients.  The obit was written by a Ms. Modular. HTML5.

M-Learning: Where’s the app for that?

eLearning 24-7

Saba Centra. As I write on my iPad, thoughts swirl abound. With all these vendors talking about their solution and its capabilities on mobile devices, it should be easy to find an app for that. Regardless if the vendor is m-learning specific, content authoring tool, LMS, web conferencing or a hybrid.  It shouldn’t matter. If your telling me your solution is mobile ready, then all I should need to do is go iTunes or Android and find your app.  Simple, right? Ahh, here’s the rub. It isn’t. Thus they can advertise they offer mobile learning. Even better. emTrain? SumTotal?

The Integration of Talent Management Systems Comes to Forefront

Learning on the Leading Edge

The talent management systems market has been under quite a bit of stress lately. In the last 90 days we have seen SAP's acquisition of SuccessFactors , followed by Oracle's acquisition of Taleo , and then the smaller Kenexa acquisition of Outstart and PeopleFluent acquisition of Strategia. What's going on? We are seeing three big trends play out here. 1. So we have entered a new world.

We visited the Genome project and the Particle Laboratory in Second Life, both great places and then we went into ProtoSphere to check it out and then we went to learn a little about scripting in Centra and then we went into Second Life to do some scripting.

Saba Earnings show Growth and Momentum - Now Truly a SaaS Company

Learning on the Leading Edge

The renewal rate is around 86%, which is down, but I believe some of these losses are clients using Centra, which is in a highly competitive collaboration systems market. This week Saba Software released one of its strongest financial results in many years. Saba, which pioneered the market for enterprise learning management systems, has now turned the corner in its transformation into a SaaS software company. The Saba "people systems cloud" is now becoming the company's primary new offering. Wipro, a large global technology solutions provider, signed up as a Saba partner.

Captured content via Centra, sent playback to vendor to transcribe and converted it into a minute script in aCNN-type presentation for delivery via an iPod. Rachel Vazquez and Pete Mitchell (alum) presented on how they used video in e-learning and how they had to convert video to an e-learning format. They also discussed how they are delivering training via video iPods. They are contemplating the development of the a monthly vodcast to send to all of the employees.

How Long Does It Take to Develop One Hour of E-Learning-Updated for 2009

Kapp Notes

For example: in 2003, the low estimate for developing One Hour of Instructor-led, Web-based training delivery (using software such as Centra, Adobe Connect, or WebEx-two-way live audio with PowerPoint)was 30 hours and the high estimate was 80 hours. Living off the Land: Capturing The Voice of Experts

The Learning Circuits

My first thought was using Centra, but the client always uses the telephone for voice, and I am not sure if they have save capability. In one project on which I am working, I have been asked for a strategy to quickly capture a lot of presentations from a lot of people to share with others. second option is to use the record voice option in PowerPoint. third is to use a tool like Audacity to record an MP3, and then have some one else align that with slides.

Webinar Software - Adoption Advice

Tony Karrer

In addition to the four they list, I've personally had experience with GoToMeeting and GoToWebinar, Elluminate, Centra and Interwise. Good question about adoption of webinar software / services - this time from someone who went to my workshop in Cincinnati - Revolution in Workplace Learning - who by the way - called it "awesome." Here's the question: We are currently moving toward web-based training for an external audience and have been experimenting with a modest product called Ready Talk. We are considering moving to other products such as Adobe Connect.

How long does it take to develop one hour of training?

Onlignment

That’s why I was interested to read the analysis by Karl Kapp (see Time to Develop One Hour of Training ): “In 2003, the low estimate for developing one hour of instructor-led, web-based training delivery (using software such as Centra, Adobe Connect, or WebEx) was 30 hours and the high estimate was 80 hours. People often ask how long it takes to develop one hour of self-study e-learning. These figures nearly always surprise people, because they wouldn’t normally spend anywhere near this time developing for the classroom. An hour is an hour is an hour. Both higher.

Keeping Up - April's Big Question

eLearning Cyclops

April's Big Question from Learning Circuits is "How to Keep up?" This is in reference the immense and rapidly expanding technology tools. It is tough to stay on top of all the emerging tools. However, being involved in an e-learning community is a big help. For me it is a blog community and following many experts on Twitter. Not only am I often made aware of new tools, but also get opinions, tips, and examples of their use. You can never keep up with it all, but access to many experts who are also finding and sharing the lastest tech tools make it much less daunting.

consolidation continues - BlackBoard + WebCT & more.

The Learning Circuits

This announcement comes on the heels of Saba acquiring Centra. Plus Saba + Centra creates a US$100M revenue company which is not too shabby! Wow, consolidation is running rampart in the eLearning space as everyone continues to merge or acquire. Look to your left and look to your right; easily one of those will not be around in six months. Today BlackBoard announced plans to merge with WebCT; the two leading providers in the higher education eLearning space (BlackBoard alone forecasts US$150M+ for their fiscal year). Clark - you need to update your Chart of Consolidations !

Blackboard lit up by Elluminate

Onlignment

After all when Saba bought Centra, which was at the time one of the major corporate web conferencing platforms, its profile dropped enormously and now it is a speck in the market compared to WebEx. Last week, Blackboard, the largest commercial provider of learning management systems to the education sector, purchased not one but two web conferencing providers that also have a strong educational heritage – Elluminate and Wimba. Whether Blackboard provides it with much protection is dubious.

White boredom

Onlignment

Typically it is found nesting inside web-conferencing and virtual classroom tools such as Cisco WebEx, Saba Centra, Adobe Connect and Elluminate. The white board is a ubiquitous piece of hardware that you find in classrooms and board rooms all around the world. In some cases it is used as little more than a notice board, or as a convenient close-up projector screen. In other situations it is used (rarely) as a highly interactive aid to group work and decision-making. It is also common to find a whiteboard in the virtual environment.

One-way conferencing in a two-way world

It wouldn’t be hard for WebEx, Adobe, Centra, Elluminate Blackboard, or their peers to provide a default conferencing environment that mirrors best practices for interactive meetings instead of mimicking what went on in yesteryear’s boring one-way workshops and classrooms.
