Open Source eLearning Tools

I was just asked about trends in open source for eLearning and particularly open source eLearning tools. Probably one of the better sources on this is Jane Hart’s Instructional Tools Directory. In addition, she indicates if they are free or cost money – which is not quite the same thing as open source. Beyond that, probably the best thing to do is to use eLearning Learning to go through it’s open source eLearning and open source eLearning Tools. Here’s some of what I pulled out.

Then, maybe open it up to subject matter experts. Wouldn't you rather have it out in the open? Open up editing slowly. Last week I presented a session at ASTD TechKnowledge entitled eLearning 2.0 - Applications and Implications. It could just as easily have been called Web 2.0 Applications in Learning. It was designed to be a small to medium size group discussion, but because the room was large it was very challenging to do that successfully. I discussed a bit of these issues in First Thoughts After ASTD Sessions. Provide the content. Choose the top 3-5. as I expected.
Reducing Costs in Precarious Times

Use free / open-source tools. Our team is doing more with free tools and open-source systems. Specifically, we are using WordPress , MediaWiki , and Scuttle. It’s no secret that we need to do more with less at work, given the financial mess the world is in. I’ve recently taken several steps at work to reduce costs and improve the effectiveness of our department’s offerings, and I thought it would be a good topic to discuss this week.
