Rustici Engine has supported xAPI (the Experience API) since 2011 when we created the initial version for ADL. The last big overhaul we made to xAPI data storage in Engine was in 2015. The Problem The xAPI standard requires us to support a variety of ways to fetch statements. It was time.

Today on the xAPI working group call, ADL shared some news about their funding over the next 12 months. ADL continues to house information about SCORM on their websites, and it’s still the best place to go to understand the state of SCORM adoption and certification. It will continue to be the best place for that.

One year ago, we kicked off a project with ADL to develop tools and resources to help accelerate the adoption of cmi5 , and ultimately xAPI, within both the DoD and across the industry as a whole. The cmi5 spec is an xAPI Profile designed for tracking xAPI enabled learning activities from an LMS.

It’s all too common to hear someone say “cmi5 is the bridge between SCORM and xAPI” around the office. xAPI came along and was designed to track all kinds of learning activities across different technologies that often sit outside of an LMS, like mobile apps, gaming, simulations, virtual reality and augmented reality.

Currently, someone can be a 4 th edition adopter but * not* certified. [3]. Sign #3: ADL itself heavily supports Tin Can as the successor of SCORM.[4]. Now, with the introduction of Tin Can API it seems certain that its adoption rate will decline even further. Low adoption. Nothing is perfect though as ADL admits [5].

While the xAPI standard and other emerging ADL initiatives are actively innovating exciting new standards, the reality is that training managers need tools that can be used to solve problems in the short term.

One of the most interesting items which presents to me an unknown variable is CMI-5, a compliance standard (formally with AICC) now headed up by ADL. Standard adoption takes time (as we can see with xAPI), so if you are concerned or worried about having to go with CMI-5, etc. – don’t. – don’t.
