Looking for systematicity, the aviation industry created a subcommittee to develop standards for Computer Based Training: the Aviation Industry CBT Committee (AICC). The Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) initiative of the Department of Defense finally had enough. And academics fought for a variety of theoretical positions.

Several other initiatives include IEEE (which is pretty much the US based effort on electric and electronic technology standards to the international stage), and the IMS efforts from academia. The Department of Defense’s ADL initiative decided upon a version, to move things forward, and thus was born SCORM. Standards are good.

On day one of our series, we learned that AICC (Aviation Industry Computer-Based-Training Committee) can be considered the first eLearning standard, used to track how learners progress through course content. Pitched as the “true next generation of SCORM”, ADL have taken over the cmi5 specification (which suggests it will evolve!).

To solve this problem, in 1999 the government tasked a small research laboratory, ADL, to “develop common specifications and standards for e-learning.” The lab combined the work of existing standards organizations like the AICC , IMS and the IEEE LTSC into a cohesive reference model.

» October 09, 2007 We Lost A Good One Folks.Well Miss You Philip Philip Dodds , Chief Architect of SCORM and ADL (and so many more important things), died this Saturday. Im sure there will be many posts remembering Philip.there should be. and were back. There are no links here although there are a number that could be included.
