The first official eLearning content standard, AICC was developed by the Aviation Industry CBT Committee in 1993 as a CD-ROM based standard. A predecessor to SCORM, AICC was difficult to work with and many steps were required to get content in the format running in a learning management system (LMS). eLearning standards like SCORM, xAPI (Tin Can) and AICC were developed to enhance the interoperability of online learning content and technologies. I read a report a few weeks back which forecast high sales in Gamification in the next few years. They push it in their marketing, their sales approach and even in communication with at least one analyst(moi).

Blackboard is the oldest player in the education space and the most dominant (revenue/sales wise). SCORM including 1.2/2004, AICC, Common Cartridge. One vendor showed me a RFP form a large metropolitan school district that was 25 pages long, had lots of text on one side with comments and questions. Another vendor showed me a school district whose RFP was 36 pages in length. Back in the 90’s I taught high school and loved it.
