Netscape was the dominant player, and while there were a couple of other browsers, everyone I knew used Netscape, and only used AOL when they could get 30 days free – (The CD). I never cared for IE, and would use alternative browsers when ever possible, Maxathon (still around), Opera (still around), Avant to mention a few.

Operating systems manufactures like Microsoft, Ubuntu, and Apple all tired of the overhead in keeping their systems secure with frequent patches, and Flash has developed a poor security reputation as a result. It’s certainly helpful that SCORM and Tin Can modules can be rendered using HTML5 as an alternative.

In 1996 Macromedia first introduced the Flash Player, developed to play videos, animations, and audio and to support enhanced interactivity in web browsers. Over the years web browsers matured and so did Flash Player, which became the most widely used plug-in to play multimedia elements on a web page. Enhance the old Flash content.
