The authoring tool industry continues to evolve. I won’t regurgitate everything that appeared and did not for that matter in the authoring tool space as a whole in 2016, but a few have crossed over in a positive light, which is pushing trend. Similar to the one I had for an LMS, here is the Authoring Tool version for 2017.

Its nearly Halloween and with that comes the shocking and fearful excitement or lack thereof of the scariest things on the plane appearing at the movie theaters, in costumes, television and for us, the course authoring tool market. Just in the past two years the per license cost of authoring tools has skyrocketed. All prices are U.S.D.

In 1989, I created my first interactive video using an authoring platform called IconAuthor, and it required a newfangled operating system called Windows 2.1. CD ROMs became easy to author, but they were soon supplanted by the ubiquity of the internet.

ToolBook authoring tool - this is the DHTML authoring tool used at my company, but prior to this I used TrainerSoft (now Outstart Trainer), which is my preference. Adobe Flash - creating interactive elements, including animation, games, immersive learning simulations, etc. Adobe Fireworks - editing graphics.

So I offered to create the updates myself, if they would pay for authoring software. Since then, I have created numerous eLearning modules, games, assessments, and other content. I’ve expanded to using Toolbook and other software. First, be aware that many LMS systems already have integrated authoring software.

Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder. Almost every course involved using Flash for interactive elements (animations, games, quizzes, simulations, video, etc.). So, do I really need to continue using these authoring tools?

I often use the phrase “the HTML5 stack” to communicate more clearly, but to me, the main thing is that people have good resources to keep them up to date on the capabilities of the technology, the delivery platforms, and the authoring tools. But HTML output that you can create with tools like Lectora and ToolBook is usually so… static.
