The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Here are five trends that are being seen in the market, but one of these trends can cause consternation, among current customers. It was a myth.

Custom domains – rather than have yourcompany.vendorname.com, some systems are now offering custom domains so that your learners see whatever name you create.com and remove the vendor name. Many will offer or have the ability to purchase the license for you, rather than you having to go to the vendor themselves and purchase it. Just because the system is integrated doesn’t mean it is the best system out there. As for customization, always be a tad concerned. It is optional. Content Authoring Tool.

Yet as in the HTML5 case, online/offline synch is not able for the vast majority of learning platforms – especially in the LMS space. It will change once TinCan rolls out, however the speed of which to integrate TinCan will be slow.

So, how about this for a twist: Increase in Revenue, boost in numbers but for some vendors, the gain is in actuality a negative because their current and potential new customers suffer.
